VisitRussia Withdraws S-400 System and Helicopters from Syria's Khmeimim Base Amid Military Consolidation
Dec 13, 2024, 04:05 PM
Russia appears to be withdrawing its S-400 air defense system from Khmeimim Air Base in Latakia, Syria. Satellite images from Maxar Technologies and ground footage show the 91N6E radar and launchers being packed up and prepared for transport. Two An-124 cargo planes have been seen at the base with their nose cones lifted, loading the S-400 components and dismantled Ka-52 attack helicopters. Large military convoys and columns of military police have been observed moving from Damascus towards Latakia, suggesting a consolidation of Russian forces at Khmeimim and Tartus Naval Base. Reports indicate that Russia is withdrawing from other bases within Syria, as noted by a Der Spiegel analysis. The withdrawal of such advanced air defense systems and equipment indicates a significant shift in Russia's military presence in the region.
