VisitRussia Vetoes Sudan Ceasefire Resolution at UN: 14 in Favor, 1 Against
Nov 18, 2024, 04:13 PM
The United Nations Security Council faced a significant setback as Russia vetoed a draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan. The resolution, co-authored by the UK and Sierra Leone, aimed to end hostilities between rival generals and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid. Despite 14 council members voting in favor, Russia's veto blocked the resolution. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy condemned Russia's actions, accusing President Vladimir Putin of exacerbating the suffering of Sudanese civilians. The vetoed resolution also demanded the full implementation of the Jeddah declaration by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). China and Russia had earlier insisted on removing provisions for regional mechanisms and reporting by the Secretary-General from the resolution. The final vote count was 14 in favor, 1 against, and no abstentions.
