VisitRussia Proposes Removing Taliban from Terrorist List, Invites to Economic Forum
May 27, 2024, 10:40 AM
Russia's Foreign Ministry and Justice Ministry have advised President Vladimir Putin that the Taliban can be removed from the list of terrorist organizations, according to TASS. This proposal follows long-standing contacts between Russian authorities and the Taliban, with Taliban delegations regularly visiting Moscow. The Taliban have been on Russia's list of terrorist organizations for over 20 years. Additionally, Russia has invited the Taliban to its major annual economic forum, indicating a move towards greater cooperation with the Islamist movement. Zamir Kabulov, director of the second Asian department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, confirmed the ministries' recommendation. The change in status could pave the way for bilateral cooperation and potential recognition of the Afghan authorities. This recommendation comes three years after the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan.
