VisitRomania and Latvia Report Russian Shahed Drone Violations of Airspace
Sep 8, 2024, 03:08 PM
Romania and Latvia, both NATO members, reported violations of their airspace by Russian drones during nighttime attacks on Ukraine. According to the Romanian Ministry of Defense, a Russian Shahed drone entered Romanian airspace on the night of September 7-8 and likely crashed on Romanian territory. The Romanian military responded by deploying F-16 fighter jets to monitor the situation. The Ukrainian Air Forces confirmed the violation. In a separate incident, a Russian military drone crashed in eastern Latvia's Rezekne region, as confirmed by Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics. An investigation into the incident is ongoing. These incursions underscore the escalating tensions and the need for NATO to address the increasing number of such incidents along its eastern flank.
