VisitReal Madrid and La Liga Investigate Racist Abuse of Lamine Yamal After Barcelona's 4-0 El Clásico Win
Oct 27, 2024, 10:50 AM
Real Madrid and La Liga have opened investigations into alleged racist abuse directed at Barcelona's 17-year-old winger Lamine Yamal, who is Spanish of Moroccan origin, during Saturday night's El Clásico match at the Santiago Bernabéu, which ended in a 4-0 victory for Barcelona. Yamal was reportedly subjected to racist insults, including derogatory terms such as "puto moro" ("fucking Moor") and "go sell tissues at the traffic light," by a section of home fans after he scored his first goal against Real Madrid. Fellow Barcelona player Alejandro Balde was also allegedly targeted with abuse. Real Madrid issued an official statement condemning "any type of behavior that involves racism, xenophobia, or violence in football and sport" and has pledged to identify and take action against the perpetrators. La Liga announced it will report the incidents to the Hate Crime Unit of the National Police's Intelligence Directorate, and Spain's Higher Sports Council (CSD) has stated that the matter will be addressed at the Anti-Violence Commission meeting on Monday.
