A devastating fire at the TRP Game Zone in Rajkot, Gujarat, has resulted in the deaths of at least 35 people, including nine children. The incident, which occurred on May 25, 2024, has prompted the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the cause of the fire. Initial reports suggest that the gaming zone lacked necessary fire safety clearances and had only one entry and exit point. The Gujarat High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident, labeling it a 'man-made disaster.' The court has summoned municipal advocates from Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, and Rajkot to explain the legalities of such establishments. DNA samples of the victims have been collected for identification, and the site is being combed for further evidence. The owner and manager of the gaming zone have been detained for questioning. The temporary structure in the gaming zone had collapsed, and ongoing renovation work was noted. A short circuit two days prior had forced a temporary closure. PM Modi has announced Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for the families of the deceased.
