VisitPresident Ruto Cancels Adani Group Deals for JKIA, KETRACO Due to US Influence
Nov 21, 2024, 01:16 PM
Kenyan President William Ruto has canceled plans to award Adani Group companies concession deals for the expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and the construction of power lines by Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO). The decision was announced during the State of the Nation Address, where Ruto directed the Transport and Energy ministries to halt the ongoing procurement processes. The cancellation comes in response to concerns raised by investigative agencies and partner nations regarding the deals. President Ruto emphasized that the move was made to address the issues and demonstrate accountability to the Kenyan public. Karen Nyamu, a political figure, noted that the cancellation was influenced by events in the US, and Adan Keynan, another political figure, criticized the deals from the outset. Kuria Kimani praised Ruto's responsiveness to public concerns.
