Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who died on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100, was honored Thursday, January 9, 2025, with a state funeral at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. President Joe Biden declared a national day of mourning and delivered a eulogy during the service, which was attended by President-elect Donald Trump, former Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama, and other dignitaries. Carter's casket, which had lain in state at the U.S. Capitol, was carried into the National Cathedral for the ceremony. Following the state funeral, his casket will be transported to his hometown of Plains, Georgia, for a private service and burial.
