VisitPopyrin Upsets Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4; Alcaraz Also Out of US Open
Aug 31, 2024, 03:51 AM
In a stunning upset at the 2024 US Open, Alexei Popyrin defeated Novak Djokovic in the third round with scores of 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. This marks Djokovic's earliest exit from the US Open since 2006 and his earliest loss at a Grand Slam since the 2017 Australian Open. The defeat also signifies the first year since 2002 that none of the 'Big 3'—Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Djokovic—have won a Grand Slam title. Popyrin's victory is his biggest career win and advances him to the fourth round, where he will face Frances Tiafoe. The upset comes just a day after Carlos Alcaraz was also eliminated from the tournament.
