Dec 9, 2024, 06:59 PM
Authorities have identified and detained 26-year-old Luigi Mangione as a person of interest in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione, a former University of Pennsylvania Engineering graduate from Towson, Maryland, was apprehended at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after being recognized by an employee who alerted the police. He was found carrying a ghost gun with a silencer matching the weapon used in the shooting, as well as fake IDs and a manifesto expressing grievances against the healthcare industry, including statements such as "These parasites had it coming" and "It had to be done." Mangione is described as an anti-capitalist and climate change activist. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch named him a "strong" person of interest in the investigation during a press conference, and NYC Mayor Adams confirmed his detention.
