VisitPoland Supports Trump's 5% GDP NATO Defense Spending Target, Sees It as Wake-Up Call
Jan 13, 2025, 07:10 PM
Poland has announced its support for U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's proposal to increase NATO defense spending to 5% of GDP, marking a significant endorsement of Trump's call for higher military expenditures among NATO allies. Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that this new target serves as an important wake-up call for the alliance. Poland, which currently spends 4.7% of its GDP on defense, is the closest to meeting Trump's proposed target. The minister emphasized that while it might take a decade for some NATO members to reach this level, Poland sees itself as a bridge between Trump's challenge and its implementation in Europe. This stance comes amidst broader discussions on NATO defense spending, with some European countries expressing reservations about the feasibility of such a high target.
