VisitPakistani Government Considers Internment Centers Amid Balochistan's Fifth Insurgency
Sep 10, 2024, 05:45 AM
The Balochistan crisis continues to escalate as the Pakistani government considers establishing internment centers for terror suspects in the region. This move, reminiscent of the Xinjiang internment camps, has drawn criticism from human rights activists. Balochistan, experiencing its fifth insurgency since its annexation by Pakistan in 1948, has seen heavy-handed tactics by the Pakistan Army, fueling further resentment. The Balochistan government, influenced by the military establishment, has been accused of systematic abuses, including placing thousands of names on the Fourth Schedule, an anti-terror watch list. In Quetta alone, 137 people were added to this list in July. Despite promises from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to address the issue of missing persons, no significant action has been taken.
