A 20-year-old Pakistani citizen, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, also known as Shahzeb Jadoon, was arrested in Canada on September 4 for allegedly planning a terrorist attack in New York City. Khan, who was residing in Canada, intended to carry out a mass shooting targeting Jewish people at a Jewish center in Brooklyn on October 7, the anniversary of Hamas' attacks in southern Israel and Yom Kippur. The plot, which was inspired by ISIS, aimed to kill as many Jewish people as possible. Khan was charged with attempting to provide material support to ISIS and planning to use automatic weapons and a hunting knife in the attack. The arrest was made near the Quebec-New York border as Khan attempted to enter the United States. Attorney General Merrick Garland confirmed the charges, emphasizing the collaborative efforts of law enforcement, including undercover agents, in preventing the attack. Rob Kissane, Special Agent in Charge of the New York Joint Terrorism Task Force, also praised the teamwork involved in thwarting the threat.
