VisitOver 4,000 VW Workers in Chattanooga to Vote in Historic UAW Unionization
Apr 16, 2024, 02:47 PM
More than 4,000 workers at Volkswagen's Chattanooga, Tennessee plant are set to vote on unionization this week, potentially making it the first foreign-owned auto plant in the U.S. to join the United Auto Workers (UAW). This historic vote, scheduled from Wednesday to Friday, requires a simple majority to pass. Jeanne Whalen reported that more than two-thirds of the 26 workers interviewed outside the plant expressed support for the union. The vote, pivotal for labor movements in the traditionally union-resistant South, has garnered solidarity from various labor groups and German works council members. Meanwhile, six GOP governors have opposed the move, suggesting it could threaten jobs and regional values.
