VisitOver 1,301 Pilgrims Die During Hajj in Saudi Arabia Amid 51.8°C Heat
Jun 24, 2024, 03:06 AM
More than 1,301 pilgrims died during this year's Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia due to extreme heat, with temperatures reaching up to 51.8 degrees Celsius. The majority of the deceased, 83%, were unauthorized pilgrims who walked long distances under direct sunlight without adequate shelter. The fatalities included over 660 Egyptians, 98 Indians, and pilgrims from other countries such as the United States and Indonesia. Saudi authorities have faced criticism for poor management and inadequate facilities, with many pilgrims lacking access to air-conditioned spaces. In response, Egypt has revoked the licenses of several travel companies involved in organizing the pilgrimage. Saudi Health Minister Fahd bin Abdurrahman Al-Jalajel confirmed these details.
