Oct 28, 2024, 03:16 PM
On Saturday, October 26, a 39-year-old Orthodox Jewish man was shot multiple times while walking to a synagogue in Chicago's West Rogers Park neighborhood. The assailant, identified as 22-year-old Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, reportedly an illegal immigrant from northwest Africa who crossed the southern border a year and a half ago, allegedly shouted 'Allahu Akbar' during the attack. Surveillance footage captured the incident, in which Abdallahi shot the victim from behind. The victim is currently in stable condition. Abdallahi returned to the scene 20 minutes later and fired upon responding police officers and paramedics, prompting officers to return fire and critically injuring him. He faces 14 felony counts, including six counts of attempted first-degree murder, seven counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, and aggravated battery. Despite the nature of the attack, authorities have not filed hate crime charges against Abdallahi.
