VisitOpenAI and Microsoft Partner with Lenfest Institute in $10M AI Program for Local Journalism
Oct 22, 2024, 01:13 PM
OpenAI and Microsoft have partnered to jointly fund a $10 million AI local news initiative, known as the Lenfest AI Collaborative and Fellowship, managed by the Lenfest Institute for Journalism. Each company is contributing $2.5 million in funding and $2.5 million in software credits to support news organizations in leveraging artificial intelligence tools for their work. The program aims to drive innovation and business sustainability in local journalism through experimentation and fellowships, without involving data licensing agreements. The initiative will begin by collaborating with five U.S. metropolitan news organizations, including Chicago Public Media, which plans to utilize AI for tasks such as transcription, summarization, and translation to reach new audiences.
