May 14, 2024, 11:32 PM
Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and chief scientist of OpenAI, has announced his departure from the San Francisco-based artificial intelligence company after 9 years. Sutskever, who played a pivotal role in the development of OpenAI, stated that he is leaving to pursue a new, personally meaningful project. He expressed confidence that OpenAI will build AGI that is both safe and beneficial. His departure follows a contentious year that included the ousting and subsequent reinstatement of CEO Sam Altman. Sutskever was one of the board members who voted to remove Altman in November. Jakub Pachocki will replace Sutskever as the chief scientist at OpenAI. Additionally, Jan Leike, another key executive who worked closely with Sutskever on AI safety, is also leaving the company.
