VisitOfcom Rules GB News Breached Impartiality Rules in Sunak Forum, Considers Statutory Sanctions
May 20, 2024, 10:14 AM
UK media regulator Ofcom has ruled that GB News breached broadcasting impartiality rules during a 'People’s Forum' featuring Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The forum, which aired in February, allowed Sunak to be questioned by viewers without challenge, leading Ofcom to label it a 'serious and repeated breach.' The segment involved 15 questions from an independently selected group of voters. Ofcom announced it is considering statutory sanctions against GB News, which could include a fine, and aims to make a decision within 60 days. GB News has responded to the ruling, calling it 'alarming' and asserting their commitment to providing a platform for public voices. The broadcaster also noted that they had offered a similar opportunity to Labour leader Keir Starmer, who declined.
