The Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare, has achieved a record enrollment of nearly 24 million Americans for the 2025 plan year, as announced by the Biden administration. This figure represents a 9% increase from the previous year and includes 3.2 million new enrollees. The surge in enrollment occurred during the final open enrollment period under President Joe Biden, with a week remaining for further sign-ups. The total number of Americans covered through the ACA now stands at 45 million, marking the highest number of insured individuals in the nation's history. The Biden administration attributes this success to efforts such as increased outreach and enrollment assistance, as well as policies that have made premiums more affordable. However, the future of these subsidies is uncertain as they are set to expire at the end of 2025, and incoming President-elect Donald Trump has historically been critical of the ACA. This marks the fourth consecutive year of record-breaking enrollment under Biden, with enrollment nearly doubling since he took office.
