New York City has introduced a new heat wave response team composed of lifeguards who will remain on duty after regular swimming hours to assist with rescues. This initiative follows record heat this summer and aims to enhance safety during extreme weather conditions. Despite these measures, swimming after closing time remains prohibited. Recently, lifeguards successfully rescued a swimmer in distress after 6 PM, highlighting the effectiveness of the new protocols. The city emphasizes the importance of adhering to beach safety rules, which include swimming only between 10 AM and 6 PM when lifeguards are on duty. The rescue operation involved NYCEM and FDNY. The new protocols were announced on Tuesday.
