VisitNorway May Build Border Fence with Russia Amid Security Concerns, Following Finland's £300 Million Barrier
Sep 29, 2024, 09:12 PM
Norway is considering building a fence along part or all of its 123-mile (198 km) border with Russia, inspired by Finland's recent construction of a £300 million security barrier following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Norwegian Justice Minister Emilie Enger Mehl announced the possibility during a visit to Finland's eastern border. The proposed fence aims to prevent potential migrant crossings from Russia, similar to the influx of 5,000 migrants in 2015 at the Storskog border crossing, the only border point between the two countries. Officials are concerned about Russia potentially using migrants in 'hybrid warfare' tactics. The fence could also be closed completely if the security situation worsens.
