VisitNorth Korea Destroys Inter-Korean Roads; South Korea Fires Warning Shots
Oct 15, 2024, 04:56 AM
North Korea has blown up sections of inter-Korean roads connecting it to South Korea on both the eastern and western sides of the peninsula, escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula. According to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, on Tuesday, October 15, North Korea detonated parts of the Gyeongui and Donghae roads, which are located north of the Military Demarcation Line and are no longer in use. The roads were built during a period of rapprochement but had not been used in years. This action follows a rare meeting between Kim Jong Un and top security officials, where they discussed a 'serious provocation violating sovereignty' and military response plans, according to state media. North Korea accused South Korea of flying drones over Pyongyang and vowed to sever all inter-Korean connections. In response, South Korea's military fired warning shots south of the Demilitarized Zone and increased surveillance along the border.
