VisitNigeria Becomes 9th BRICS Partner, 6th Largest Population and 1st in Africa
Jan 18, 2025, 12:34 AM
Nigeria, with the 6th largest population globally and the 1st in Africa, has officially joined the BRICS group as a partner country, marking it as the ninth nation to achieve this status. The announcement was made by Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is currently presiding over the BRICS bloc. Nigeria, one of Africa's largest economies, joins Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan as partner countries. This move aligns with Nigeria's active role in strengthening Global South cooperation and reforming global governance, priorities for Brazil's 2025 presidency of the BRICS. The BRICS group now consists of 10 full members and 9 partner countries, with Brazil having recently announced Indonesia's addition as a full member and Thailand's inclusion as a partner.
