A jury acquitted New England Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers on Friday in his assault and battery trial. Peppers, who had been on trial for charges stemming from an incident in October at his Braintree home, denied the allegations of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and strangulation. The woman accusing Peppers testified that he grabbed her by the neck, slammed her against the wall, and pushed her down the stairs after another man called her cellphone multiple times while they were in bed. Peppers, in his testimony, stated that he believed the accusations were an attempt to sabotage his career. The jury deliberated for just over an hour before reaching the not guilty verdict after a two-day trial. Peppers had been placed on the commissioner's exempt list and missed seven games following the incident. He signed a three-year contract extension with the Patriots over the summer, which runs through 2027. Additionally, Peppers admitted to cocaine possession before the trial, and the woman has filed a $9.5 million lawsuit against him.
