NCAA and Power Five File $2.8 Billion Settlement with New Roster Limits and NIL Practices

The NCAA and its Power Five conferences have filed a landmark $2.8 billion settlement in the House v. NCAA case. The settlement, filed in the Northern District Court of California, includes $2.7 billion in back pay for athletes, a new revenue-sharing formula, and stricter NIL practices. It also outlines new roster limits for various sports: 105 for football, 34 for baseball, 15 for men’s and women’s basketball, 25 for softball, and 18 for volleyball. The settlement aims to provide increased benefits to student-athletes and includes measures to prevent phony NIL deals, such as a special master and arbitrator to police the revenue-sharing cap. Schools will be able to offer scholarships to full rosters starting in the 2025-26 academic year. Additionally, the proposed model will allow schools to provide up to 22% of the average Autonomy 5 athletic media, ticket, and sponsorship revenue to athletes.
