NASA scientists, while conducting tests with the UAVSAR instrument, have inadvertently discovered the remnants of Camp Century, a U.S. military base buried 100 feet beneath Greenland's ice sheet since its abandonment in 1967. Originally built in 1959 as a nuclear missile testing site during the Cold War, the base was part of a secretive initiative. The radar imaging revealed structural elements of the base, which was once a self-sufficient city under the ice, complete with living quarters, a hospital, and even a nuclear reactor. The discovery has raised concerns about the potential environmental hazards posed by the base's buried contaminants, including weapons, sewage, and fuel, as the Greenland Ice Sheet continues to thaw.
