VisitNancy Mace Targets Transgender Rep.-elect McBride with Capitol Restroom Ban Backed by Speaker Johnson
Nov 19, 2024, 05:03 PM
Representative Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, has introduced a resolution to ban transgender women from using women's restrooms in the U.S. Capitol, confirming that the proposal is directly aimed at Representative-elect Sarah McBride, a Democrat from Delaware who will be the first openly transgender member of Congress. Mace stated, "I'm not going to stand for a man, someone with a penis, in the women's locker room." She aims to have the rule included in the rules package in January. The enforcement of this rule would fall under the jurisdiction of the House Sergeant at Arms if passed. Mace, a rape survivor, emphasized her stance by saying, "I know how vulnerable women and girls are in private spaces." Speaker Mike Johnson has expressed support for the resolution, indicating that biological men will be prohibited from using women's restrooms in the Capitol. McBride responded to the proposal, calling it "a blatant attempt from far right-wing extremists to distract from their inability to govern."
