VisitMichigan Confirms Second Human Bird Flu Case, Third in US This Year with Respiratory Symptoms
May 30, 2024, 05:16 PM
Michigan health officials have confirmed a second human case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5) virus infection in the state. This marks the third human case in the United States this year, with the latest case involving a farm worker who experienced acute respiratory illness. The infected individual was not wearing personal protective equipment and is currently recovering. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, in collaboration with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), plans to begin blood tests of dairy farm workers in Ionia County for signs of prior bird flu infection. The latest case occurred on a different farm from the previous case. The CDC maintains that the risk to the general public remains low.
