VisitMiami's Jim Larranaga Retires at 75 Less Than Two Years After Final Four; Bill Courtney Named Interim Coach
Dec 26, 2024, 04:13 PM
Jim Larranaga, the head coach of the University of Miami men's basketball team, has announced his immediate retirement, effective today. The 75-year-old coach has led the Hurricanes for 14 seasons, taking them to their first Final Four appearance in 2023. Since that historic run, Miami has struggled with a 19-25 record, tied for second-worst in the ACC, and currently holds a 4-8 record this season, including home losses to Charleston Southern and Mount St. Mary's. Bill Courtney, an associate head coach who has previously worked with Larranaga at Bowling Green, George Mason, and Miami, will take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. The university is expected to hold a press conference at 1:30 p.m. today following a team meeting. Larranaga's storied career includes 716 wins and leading both George Mason and Miami to their first and only Final Four appearances. He is the winningest coach at both institutions.
