VisitMexico Seeks Safe Passage for Ecuador's Ex-VP Glas, Ecuador Refuses
Aug 6, 2024, 12:06 PM
The Mexican government has formally requested Ecuador to grant a safe passage for the imprisoned former Vice President Jorge Glas to relocate to a third country. This request is in accordance with Article XIX of the Caracas Convention. Mexico has offered to provide political asylum to Glas, citing his critical health condition as a reason for his release. The request follows an incident involving an attack on the Mexican embassy in Quito. President López Obrador confirmed Mexico's willingness to receive Glas and criticized the International Court of Justice for not resolving Mexico's demand against Ecuador regarding the embassy attack. However, Ecuador has reaffirmed its decision not to allow Glas to leave the country, stating that granting diplomatic asylum is not permissible.
