Mexico's President to Send Letter to Google Over Gulf of Mexico Renaming to 'Gulf of America' by Trump
Jan 29, 2025, 03:02 PM
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced plans to send a letter to Google regarding the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the 'Gulf of America' on its maps in the United States. This change was reportedly made following an executive order by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Sheinbaum emphasized that the name of a sea cannot be changed by the decision of one country, and that such a change should be determined by an international organization. She also plans to request that 'América Mexicana' be included on Google's maps. The Mexican government, through its Foreign Ministry, is drafting the letter to address the issue and clarify how international seas are named. Sheinbaum clarified that, as of now, Google has not made any changes to the nomenclature of the Gulf of Mexico.
