VisitMeta's AI Training Using European Data Faces Privacy Hurdles, Opt Out Available
Jun 14, 2024, 09:47 AM
Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, plans to train its AI models using public social media posts from European users. This initiative aims to enhance their Llama AI large language model by reflecting European languages and cultures. However, the plan has sparked significant privacy concerns, particularly regarding compliance with stringent EU data protection laws, such as GDPR. Privacy group NOYB has urged regulators to halt Meta's plans. Despite Meta's efforts to navigate these regulations, the Irish privacy regulator has requested that Meta not launch its AI in Europe. Meta has described this decision as a setback for European innovation and AI competition. Users have the option to opt out, as noted in Meta's Generative AI Privacy Policy.
