Meta Launches Edits App Next Month to Compete With ByteDance's Banned CapCut
Jan 19, 2025, 08:17 PM
Meta has announced the launch of a new video editing app called Edits, in response to the recent ban of TikTok and its associated app CapCut, owned by ByteDance, in the U.S. The announcement comes on the same day that TikTok briefly went offline due to the federal ban. Edits, which will be available next month on iOS and soon after on Android, is designed to compete directly with CapCut, offering a suite of creative tools for video creators. Instagram head Adam Mosseri, who made the announcement on Threads, stated that the app aims to provide the best possible tools for creators, emphasizing its focus on those passionate about making videos on their phones. Features of Edits include a dedicated tab for inspiration, another for tracking ideas, a high-quality camera, and the ability to share drafts and gain insights on video performance on Instagram. This move by Meta echoes its past strategy when it launched Instagram Reels shortly after TikTok was banned in India.
