Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, has agreed to pay a $1.4 billion settlement to the state of Texas. The lawsuit, filed in February 2022 by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, accused Meta of illegally using facial recognition technology to collect biometric data from millions of Texans without their consent. This settlement, the largest privacy settlement ever obtained from an action brought by a single state, aims to halt Meta's unauthorized capture and use of personal biometric data. The lawsuit highlighted that Meta's practices violated Texas law by not obtaining the necessary user authorization for data collection.
