VisitMenendez Brothers Seek Sentence Review Amid New Abuse Evidence After 28 Years
Nov 25, 2024, 02:11 PM
Erik and Lyle Menendez, now aged 53 and 56, are set to appear virtually before a judge on Monday for the first time in 28 years, as they seek to have their life-without-parole sentences re-examined. The brothers were convicted of murdering their parents, José and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills home in 1989. The hearing will address their habeas corpus petition filed last year, which requests a review of new evidence, including allegations of sexual abuse by their father that were not presented during their original trials. This new evidence has led the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office to recommend resentencing, potentially paving the way for the brothers' release. Public interest in the case has been reignited, partly due to recent documentaries and series. Sixteen seats have been allotted to the public for the virtual hearing, with the resentencing hearing expected in December.
