Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell has been appointed as the new chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Mayor Karen Bass announced the selection at a news conference on Friday, October 4, 2024. McDonnell, who has a long history with the LAPD, having graduated from the LAPD Academy and worked up to Assistant Chief, also served as Chief of Long Beach Police Department and LA County Sheriff. His appointment follows the surprise retirement of Chief Michel Moore earlier this year.
