VisitMayor Eric Adams Announces $2 Million Trade-In Program to Prevent E-Bike Lithium-Ion Battery Fires
Jul 22, 2024, 07:56 PM
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced a series of new measures aimed at preventing lithium-ion battery fires. The initiatives, rolled out in Lower Manhattan, include the installation of outdoor charging stations, a trade-in program, and an educational campaign. The Safe Charging Accelerator will propose rules to allow property owners to install e-bike battery swapping and charging cabinets on sidewalks. The $2 million trade-in program, announced at a press conference, will enable eligible food delivery workers to exchange unsafe e-bikes and lithium-ion batteries for new, UL-certified devices. This program is the first of its kind in the nation and is designed to enhance the safety of all New Yorkers.
