VisitMassive 100-Foot-Wide Sinkhole Swallows Soccer Field in Alton, Illinois on June 26
Jun 27, 2024, 02:47 PM
A massive sinkhole, measuring approximately 100 feet wide and up to 50 feet deep, opened up in Gordon Moore Park in Alton, Illinois, on June 26. The sinkhole, caused by the collapse of an underground mine owned by New Frontier Materials, swallowed part of a $1.2 million soccer field, including a light pole and several benches. The park has been closed for safety checks. Dramatic video footage captured the moment of the collapse, which left a substantial crater in the turf. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as no one was on the field at the time.
