VisitManchester United Legend Denis Law, Only Scottish Ballon d'Or Winner, Dies at 84
Jan 17, 2025, 08:13 PM
Denis Law, known as 'The King' and 'The Lawman,' legendary forward for Manchester United, Manchester City, and Scotland, has died at the age of 84, his family announced. Law, the only Scottish player to win the Ballon d'Or in 1964, scored 237 goals in 404 appearances for Manchester United between 1962 and 1973, making him the club's third-highest goalscorer behind Sir Bobby Charlton and Wayne Rooney. He was part of the famous 'Holy Trinity' alongside George Best and Bobby Charlton and helped the club win two First Division titles and the FA Cup. Although he missed the 1968 European Cup Final due to injury, he was a key figure in the team's success during that period. Law debuted for Scotland at age 18, scoring against Wales at Ninian Park in 1958. Manchester United released a statement expressing deep sadness, saying, 'Everyone at Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law... Our deepest condolences go out to Denis’s family and many friends. His memory will live on forever more.' Tributes have poured in from former captains Bryan Robson, Gary Neville, and Wayne Rooney. Law had been battling Alzheimer's disease and dementia.
