VisitMagnitude 7.1 Earthquake Hits Kyushu, Japan; 20cm Tsunami Waves Reported

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 struck off the coast of Miyazaki on Japan's main southwest island of Kyushu on Thursday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The earthquake initially had a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 but was later revised to 7.1. Following the quake, a tsunami advisory was issued for the southern region of Japan, including the prefectures of Miyazaki, Kochi, Ehime, Oita, and Kagoshima. Tsunami waves, estimated to reach up to 1 meter, were expected to impact the region, with reports indicating that waves of up to 20 centimeters had already been observed. The advisory was issued by NHK, and the JMA reported no immediate signs of major damage.
