VisitLukashenko Faces Backlash for Anti-Semitic Remarks; Israeli Protest
Jun 16, 2024, 07:48 PM
Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has come under fire for making anti-Semitic remarks. Lukashenko stated that out of 30 individuals charged with corruption, 15 were Jewish, questioning whether they held a privileged position in society. He referred to these individuals as thieves, suggesting they steal from society without considering their own future. His comments have been widely condemned as hateful and dangerous. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, a prominent Belarusian opposition leader, criticized Lukashenko's statements, asserting that his regime is the true source of corruption. She accused Lukashenko of using hate to cover his own crimes. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz also condemned the remarks, labeling them as 'unacceptable' and 'outrageous'. The Israeli Foreign Affairs Ministry has officially protested against Lukashenko's statements.
