VisitLufthansa Agrees to Pay Record $4 Million U.S. Fine for Discriminating Against Jewish Passengers
Oct 15, 2024, 06:50 PM
Germany's flagship airline, Lufthansa, has agreed to pay a $4 million fine imposed by the U.S. Department of Transportation for allegedly discriminating against Jewish passengers during a May 2022 flight. The airline reportedly denied boarding to 128 Jewish passengers on a connecting flight in Frankfurt after they had flown from New York. The passengers were identified by their traditional Orthodox Jewish clothing. U.S. authorities concluded that the passengers were discriminated against as part of the airline’s effort to address the alleged misbehavior of some passengers. The fine is the largest civil rights penalty ever imposed by the Department of Transportation against an airline.
