VisitLouisiana Becomes First State to Accept Bitcoin and Crypto Payments via Lightning Network
Sep 18, 2024, 11:57 PM
The State of Louisiana has become the first in the United States to officially accept Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as valid forms of payment for state services. This initiative, announced by the Louisiana Treasury Department, allows residents to pay using Bitcoin via the Lightning network, USD stablecoins, and other cryptocurrencies. The first transaction was a hunting license purchased using Bitcoin. Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming emphasized that this move provides citizens with more flexibility and freedom in their payment options. The state also enacted House Bill 488, signed into law by Governor Jeff Landry, which defends Bitcoin holders' rights and bans the creation of a central bank digital currency (CBDC). This is part of a broader push towards establishing a Bitcoin strategic reserve in Louisiana.
