VisitLong Island's Nassau County Passes Bill Banning Face Masks in Public, 12-0 Vote
Aug 6, 2024, 04:11 AM
Nassau County, New York, has passed a controversial bill banning the use of face masks in public spaces. The bill, which was approved by a vote of 12-0 with all seven Democrats abstaining, makes it a misdemeanor to wear a mask or any facial covering to hide one's identity while in public places. Violators could face up to $1,000 in fines and/or up to one year in jail. The bill includes exemptions for health, religious, or cultural reasons. The legislation, introduced by Rep. Mazi Pilip, aims to prevent individuals from using masks to conceal their identities while committing illegal acts. County Executive Bruce Blakeman emphasized that people should not cover their faces in a way that hides their identity unless they have a medical condition or religious imperative. The bill's passage led to protests, with some activists being forcibly removed from the county legislature meeting. The bill is part of the 'Mask Transparency Act' and was passed in Long Island.
