VisitLilo, 'Charming Old Gentleman Otter,' Dies at 17; Only 2 Otters Remain in Japan
Jan 4, 2025, 03:22 AM
Lilo, a 17-year-old male sea otter known as the 'Charming Old Gentleman Otter' in Japan, has passed away at the Marine World Uminonakamichi aquarium in Fukuoka. Lilo, whose name became the top trending term on Japanese Twitter, was a beloved figure who entertained visitors with his performances during feeding times. His death leaves only two sea otters in captivity in Japan, both females at the Toba Aquarium in Mie Prefecture. Lilo's health had been deteriorating since late November, with noticeable changes in his fur grooming behavior, leading to his withdrawal from public display on December 27. Despite efforts to treat him, Lilo's condition worsened, and he passed away on January 4. The Marine World has set up a memorial for Lilo, reflecting the significant impact he had on visitors and the community.
