Liam Coen Departs Tampa Bay Buccaneers to Lead Jacksonville Jaguars as Head Coach
Jan 24, 2025, 12:17 AM
Liam Coen, the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has agreed to become the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. This decision comes after a tumultuous week where Coen initially withdrew from consideration for the Jaguars' head coaching position, opting instead to sign a new contract with the Buccaneers that would have made him one of the highest-paid coordinators in the NFL. However, following the Jaguars' dismissal of general manager Trent Baalke, Coen re-engaged with Jacksonville and met with owner Shad Khan. Coen's move to the Jaguars marks the second consecutive year that the Buccaneers have lost their offensive coordinator to a head coaching position, following Dave Canales' departure to the Carolina Panthers the previous year. Under Coen's leadership in 2024, the Buccaneers achieved top-five rankings in both scoring and total yardage, with quarterback Baker Mayfield setting career highs in passing yards (4,500), touchdowns (41), and completion percentage (71.4%) under head coach Todd Bowles. Coen replaces Doug Pederson, who was fired by the Jaguars earlier this month.
