Aug 8, 2024, 06:56 PM
Botswana's Letsile Tebogo made history at the Paris Olympics by winning the gold medal in the men's 200 meters, marking the first Olympic gold for his country. Tebogo clocked a time of 19.46 seconds, setting an area record, and defeating American sprinters Kenny Bednarek and Noah Lyles, who took silver and bronze respectively. Bednarek finished with a time of 19.62 seconds. Lyles, the pre-race favorite, finished third with a time of 19.70 seconds despite being diagnosed with COVID-19 two days prior to the event. This victory makes Tebogo the first African sprinter to win an Olympic gold in the 200 meters. Lyles, who has a history of asthma, required medical attention and was seen leaving the track in a wheelchair after the race.
