Dec 1, 2024, 04:31 AM
Lou Carnesecca, the legendary Hall of Fame basketball coach who led St. John’s University to national prominence, has died at the age of 99, the university confirmed. Affectionately known as "Louie," Carnesecca was famous for his colorful sweaters and charismatic personality. He coached St. John's for 24 seasons and amassed winning records in all 32 seasons of his coaching career, including eight years at his high school alma mater. Under his leadership, St. John's secured three Big East titles and reached the Final Four in 1985. His impact on the game was felt nationwide, and he was a revered figure in New York City's sports scene. In a memorable moment, rival coach John Thompson once wore a replica of Carnesecca's sweater during a game. Tributes are pouring in from across the basketball community, including from current St. John's coach Rick Pitino. Carnesecca's passing comes just weeks before what would have been his 100th birthday on January 5.
