Bill McCartney, the legendary Colorado football coach who led the Buffaloes to their only national championship in 1990, has passed away at the age of 84. McCartney died on Friday night, peacefully surrounded by family, after a long battle with dementia, as confirmed by his family. Known as the winningest coach in Colorado's history, he compiled a record of 93-55-5 during his tenure from 1982 to 1994. Under his leadership, the Buffaloes won three Big Eight Conference titles and achieved 10 consecutive winning seasons. McCartney coached notable players, including 1994 Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan Salaam, and retired in 1994. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2013. Beyond football, he was a trailblazer and advocate for faith and community, founding the Christian organization Promise Keepers. His legacy extends beyond the field, as he inspired countless players and coaches. McCartney is survived by his children and grandchildren, with memorial service details to be announced.
